The Academic Advisor Meeting..
Alright.. for the fourth class in our Softskill subject at school, we are require to arrange a meeting for us to meet our academic advisor. This is important because we have to do so in order for us to print our examination slip and also for us to know where to look for guidance in case we need them. So to meet this academic advisor, we need to email her and when she respond like this :
so, only then can we meet her.
My expectation of my academic advisor before I met her was really vague. I don't really put much thought in it other than expecting she would be awesome since she has Dr. as her title. I thought she would be a stern and unapproachable person but later I found that how wrong I was.
I met her in person, I was shocked by her friendliness. I was expecting maybe she was going to be aloof or have this air of authority around her but I found none of that. She is very friendly and approachable. She is very easy to talk to made me respect her even more.
We met her by going in a group. Before, we've met her on Faculty day and she gave us her contact number on that day so that we can reach her easily that way. we introduce ourselves and she had been very hospitable to us. We starting our meeting with question like whats her full name and small talk about how her families doing. And then we ask about her academic background as well as her career background. From what she told us, she is a mother of two sons which in high school and elementary school respectively. She also have a loving husband. she started her degree at UniTEN and then furthering master at UiTM and then continuing her PhD at UniKL. She 20 plus years of experience in lecturing and fall in love with the profession when she freelancing at one of the private college at Sarawak. Before she dived in lecturing career, she had been working at an audit firm for one year, however she felt that it not suited her so she try her luck in lecturing hoping to find her passion. She started as lecturer at Standford Private College for 2 years if I'm not mistaken and that was when she found her love at teaching. Then she resign and continue to be lecturer at Politeknik Kuching for 3 years before she decide to continue her Master. After she receive her Master then she applied position as lecturer at UNIMAS.
She told us about her experiences and advice us on how to make choices. She said not to be to rush in life. Take time to know what you really like and its not wrong to try everything. She remind us how effort is more important than result but personally I think that not every people think that way. However, I respect that way of thinking. Overall its been a very nice talk with her. After that day, I occasionally will come to her office to ask for her opinion on things I confuse of and I feel grateful to have her as my academic advisor.
